OPUS MAGNUM is the central concept in Alchemy. It describes an attempt to turn metal into gold, but it is also a symbolic metaphor for the lifelong process of inner transformation - the evolution of consciousness. Literally translated from latin as a Great Work, OPUS MAGNUM imply a humility before a process larger than oneself. Symbolically, it represents letting go of the old identity, purification, and emergence of a new unified self. Psychologically, it illustrates the journey from unconscious existence to conscious being.
